How a Camera Replaced a Security Guard on a Live Site
Security guards are expensive. A single overnight shift can cost several hundred pounds, and if you need cover seven nights a week across a four week project, the numbers stack up quickly. For smaller contractors and developers working to a tight programme, that kind of cost is hard to justify when the risk is speculative rather than immediate.
On one of our earlier deployments, a client made the switch. They had been using a manned guard overnight on a live construction site. The guard was there to watch the compound and the machinery that was being left on site between shifts. The client wanted to know whether a camera could do the same job.
What changed
The Safety Eye unit went in where the guard had been standing. Same location, same purpose: watching the compound, watching the entrance, making sure anyone who came onto the site after hours was recorded.
The difference is that the camera does not get tired. It does not need a break, it does not lose concentration at 3am, and it is recording everything to both the unit and the cloud throughout the shift. If something happens, it is captured. If nothing happens, you still have the footage to confirm nothing happened. That peace of mind matters to site managers and project directors who need to be able to account for what happens on their sites.
The deterrence piece
One thing that surprised the client was how visible the unit was compared to a person standing in a compound. The bollard is large, it is brightly marked, and it sits in plain view of anyone approaching the site. People approaching in the dark who might have assumed the site was empty and unmonitored would have seen it immediately.
The unit stayed on site for the duration of that phase of the project. The client has been back in touch since.
Is it right for every site?
Not necessarily. There are situations where a physical presence is needed, particularly on very large sites or where there are complex access arrangements. But for a standard compound with machinery and materials that need watching overnight, a well-positioned camera unit with cloud recording covers the ground well and at a fraction of the cost.
